What comes off your pay

  • Income tax: the lower of 20% of income, or 26% of income above the threshold (£21,250 in 2026, plus £3,950 per child). Everyone has been taxed independently since 1 January 2026.
  • Long-term care: up to 1.5% of income, worked out the same way with a 1.95% marginal rate. No tax, no contribution.
  • Social Security: 6% of earnings up to £6,062 a month, once you earn £1,296 a month or more.
  • No capital gains or inheritance tax. GST is 5% on most spending.
